Overheard

" I can write A and B in the British language."

Wesley reacts with amazement and Clare tells him how challenging it is to do. It is so hard that she even needs a special book to do it.

The dictionary.

A winter update.

1.  We finally made our fire bowl area in the back yard!  Now we are enjoying more fires in the lower temperatures complete with marshmallow roasts.  Clare is a toaster and Wesley is a flame broiled.

2.  The kids are reading freaks in streaks.  Last night Clare bawled and bawled of fear of ghosts and haunted bones and wouldn't sleep.  She got a heaping spoonful of peer pressure in the Media Center and checked out a mystery that she can read just fine but is above her level of maturity.

3.  I took my first golf lesson and got an unlimited month pass to the Sea Palms driving range on Tuesday.  Yesterday I couldn't lift my arm higher than my shoulder.  I LOVED hitting the golf balls and working with the pro but next time I need to stretch and follow up with Motrin.  I'm meeting my friend there at 2 pm today to try again.  I'm bringing a book just in case things don't work out.

4.  Tonight Clare is having her very first sleepover.  We are hosting.

5.  The kids are learning to jump rope to some song "Buble gum, buble gum in a dish.  How many pieces do you wish? One, two, three." But with the giant jump rope we aren't getting very far.  Mario and I on the other hand think it's great fun to jump rope, but our turners are too short.

6.  I got Clare a sewing machine at an estate sale and took back the toy one that Santa brought.  This one is a Pfaff and is all metal.  It's simple, sews sturdy, and will be great to learn on.  This weekend I let her try mine and had to pry her off.  I'm excited for her and am hoping for great patience from myself.

Skating queen.

My grandparents met at the roller skating rink in Indiana. Per my grandpa she was the "roller queen" and the best dancer on wheels.

Saturday we let the kids loose on the rink in Savannah for their first time. She has a distance to go but the roller queen title is in her bloodline.

Cousins.

Happy Thanksgiving

We are celebrating with family gathered pot luck style later today. The kids are hoping for an afternoon with their cousins in a pool and their parents are hoping that said pool is indoor or that there is at least a heated pool on the property.

Wesley has his costume prepared and I have a new CF card to capture magic. (Mario helped me figure out that the reason mine wasn't working was due to the wash and dry. Oops.)

More stories to come.

She picked it. "Let's share fries at McDonalds."

So we stopped and bonded. Just us on a Sunday afternoon.

ISO Las Vegas Tips

I'm currently on a plane with Mario headed to Las Vegas to celebrate a very important birthday.

Let me know if you have ideas on:
1: must see
2: cheap eats
3: favorite moderate splurge
4: favorite show
5: avoid with the plague

Goodwill delay.

At the end of When Women Were Birds 54 Variations on Voice by Temptest Williams there's a line I love.

The daughter reflects on her mother and recalls that each time she would ask whether she should keep or toss something her mother would ALWAYS say "let it go."

Trying to go with that theme I filled ip two more bags of stuff to take to goodwill. The kids and I pulled the orange car up to the drop box and found a family of five raccoons. The happy coons did not budge. So we pulled up next to them and watched. I decided that the bags in the back of my car could definitely wait.

#1 on my Christmas list

Clare got a box yesterday and she won't share. I got to smell them (new play dough and crayons are two things adults always take a whiff of given the chance).

Two minutes before Mother of the Year

Wesley said he wanted to go in the haunted house at the school festival. Clare did not. To prepare, he creeped up next to the wicked witch attendant, get in a grouping of four kids, and then run out of line each time they forward.

Over and over. Back and forth. Clare and I waited for him to fight this interior battle between wanting to know what lurked behind the black tarp and little boy fear.

Finally I suggested I go with him. He agreed that this would be a great idea an the witch let us pass. Clare ran around to the exit to wait.

Immediately once the first tarp pulled back and revealed a dead body on the floor that slowly sat up I knew this was NOT a good idea. He was terrified.

Things aka fifth graders in gory costumes grabbed out at him while adults creepily moved about. The music was loud. Screams prevailed.

I bent down and scooped him up and carried him through the other sections. I held my arm out as a barrier between him and the creatures. I used my mama evil eye to ward off the grown up creatures and got us out as fast as I could.

He was sobbing at the end where we met Clare. We sat under the fluorescent light in the school hallway and I rocked him until his tears slowed. During this time Clare realized that I dropped her prize bag somewhere in the haunted house and she starts losing it about HER bag of plastic and sugar junk. So back to the haunted house with the sobbing child and the about to lose it child.

Long story short: of course they could not find it. Mario doesn't get his baked goods because they were in the bag. She has no festival loot At 7:30 pm I am walking in the dark with two tired unfed crying (actually, one wailing) children to the car.

At that moment I awarded myself another mother of the year award. It's not just winning it once, it's actually a contest to see how many you acquire over the year.

Raffle loot.

Saturday we ended up at The Home Depot where they hosted a fall festival. Amidst the pumpkin painting, pet adoption area, and putt putt I entered all of us in a raffle.

A little back story: these kids believe that they can win. Friday they found out that their fall festival posters won 2nd and 3rd place. A ticket to something means that you WILL win.

Anyhow. This morning while eating my kashi and sipping my coffee the phone rang. I declined the call, as I often do right now, and checked the voice mail a hour or or so later.

Turns out that the kids weren't so lucky, but Mario had the magic numbers at the 4:00 pm drawing. We made it a date to claim his (ahem, my) prize and went out for pizza afterwards.

I'm not exactly sure what this thing does or what it is because we haven't involved electricity or instruction manuals into our new relationship. But something that sands stone? That's got to be a cool toy to own.

Here's the loot:
